“A tourist generally has an eye for the things that, through repetitive familiarity have become almost invisible to the resident.” – Liam Heneghan
Travel can be a tonic.
Travel can be like a magic elixir that opens your eyes, heightens your senses to a “new” world ready to be explored.
We drink it in and pay attention to everything.
What’s ordinary to local residents becomes extraordinary in our eyes.
Why?
As we spend our daily life in a familiar place, muscle memory sets in, routines take over, and one day becomes like the next. The commute, trip to the grocery store or drive around town is like amnesia. Forgotten.
Essentially, we stop noticing our immediate surroundings. We become numb, almost blind to the world around us.
Psychologists who specialize and study perception call this phenomenon “inattentional blindness.”
Granted, it’s difficult to live life in a perpetual state of observation and awe.
But, perhaps there are times when we should be a tourist in our own town. Times when we should discover and see our surroundings with fresh eyes.
And, there are always times when we should travel. When we should travel to a new city, a new state, or a new country. When we should take delight and amazement as a traveler in what the locals may find mundane, boring, or even strange.
Travel more. Travel better.
But, we should warn you – travel is contagious.
